FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

Universities and Colleges Embrace “Shots Fired on Campus, Student Edition”

Hundreds of universities and colleges nation-wide integrate “Shots Fired on Campus, Student Edition” into their campus security training programs.

While many colleges have launched training programs for employees, fewer have coached students on how to respond to school violence. The Center for Personal Protection and Safety typically specializes in prevention of campus and workplace violence. But after hundreds of colleges and universities licensed a DVD it made on what to do in the event of an office shooting, the company decided to create "Shots Fired on Campus." The 20-minute video features interviews with law-enforcement specialists and demonstrates to viewers how running, hiding, or barricading a door could help them survive an active-shooter incident. It also shows how, as a last resort, a group of individuals might overpower and seize a gunman's weapon by spreading out and teaming up. According to Randy Spivey, Executive Director of the Center for Personal Protection and Safety, positive feedback has been heartening. According to Cornell University’s Director of Risk Management, "Colleges and universities have spent a great deal of time and money since Virginia Tech and Northern Illinois in trying to make their campuses safer.  Showing the Shots Fired video to our employees is one of the best things we can do. Every employee that has viewed it says there should be mandatory viewing for every student, staff member, and faculty member. It empowers people and meets a real need.” A Purdue University spokesman noted, "This video stresses awareness, preparation, and rehearsal, the keys to safety...” A University of Utah representative stressed that, “The University takes student safety very seriously. ...If we ever have an active shooter situation on campus, it is important to know what actions to take.”  The goal of Shots Fired is to equip individuals with a survival mindset to quickly evaluate options and make life-saving decisions during an active-shooter or hostage incident.
